Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

So much for normal.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “I hadn't seen Reth since he had come to visit me in the hospital... and I never wanted to again. Him or any of the other creepy, manipulative, amoral, psychotic, insert-further-negitive-adjectives-of-your-choice-here faeries.”
    Evelyn
  • “I think we've established you are nothing if not stubborn and categorically incapable of choosing the things that are good for you.”
    Reth
  • “Aha! Iron.” “So?” “So, how long have you worked with faeries? Heaven and hell, you don’t know anything, do you? The reason faeries don’t like iron is that it ties them too strongly to this world. The Paths aren’t part of this world—you can’t take iron there. It won’t let you.” “You do realize that makes no sense.” “Unlike being able to open a door in the wall and take you to another hemisphere in a matter of minutes? How odd. Everything about Faerie is usually so rational.”
    Jack and Evelyn
  • “Faeries didn’t have wings and bordered on evil; pixies were dirty, feral, and tended to bite; and mermaids had neither glorious hair nor seashell bras. Now this about unicorns. Sometimes reality sucked.”
    Evelyn
  • “Lend couldn’t be jealous of Jack. It might look bad, but he had to understand there was no one else for me. Jack was fun, cute even, but there wasn’t anything in me that was attracted to the little maniac.”
    Evelyn
  • “"Oh. No. He's just a little unbalanced and lonely." He put his arms around my waist, frowning."Can't he be lonely and unbalanced around someone else's girlfriend?"”

Where we’ve always been.” I bit my lip, nodding against his forehead. “There’s a place for us there, right?” “Always.” He put his lips to mine, sealing our own little spot in the world. Together.
