- Shoko Morgan: The main character - her life begins in Japan. She marries an American just after World War II and moves to United States.
- Charlie Morgan: Shoko's husband. He served in the Navy as a corpsman.
- Sue Morgan: Charlie and Shoko's daughter
- Mike Morgan: Charlie and Shoko's son, he is much older than his sister and exhibits odd behaviors for a man in his forties.
- Helena: The daughter of Suiko and her high-school love, Craig.
- Taro: Shoko's brother who has hated Americans since losing to them in the war.
- Sumiko: Taro's granddaughter.
- Tetsuo: One of Taro's friends to whom Shoko is briefly engaged.
- Ronin: A socially outcast gardener who befriends Shoko during her husband-hunting years.
