• Lord Guy de Warenne:: A crusader, age 28. Lord of the Welsh marches and loyal to Edward. He brings Leila back to England with him.
• Leila Gervais:: Age 19. Of English parentage but born in Damascus where she was raised by and aprenticed to a physician. She helped to save Guy's life.
• Lady Eve Gervais:: Sinjar's third wife, age 43. Leila and Roger's mother, from her marriage to lord William.
• Sinjar, lord Al-Aziz:: Eve's second husband. Purchased Eve and infant Leila from slave traders. This is the man who raised Leila as a father and the physician that trained her.
• Mawdud:: Governor of Damascus, capital city in Syria.
• Suhel:: Eunuch in Sinjar's household
• Jamal Al-Aziz:: Leila's betroth. Also a physician and the son of Sinjar via his second wife.
• Ayhan:: Leila's personal servant in Sinjar's household.
• Nittia:: Leila's personal servant in Sinjar's household.
• Majida:: A slave of Sinjar's household, given as servant to Eve and also Leila's nursemaid.
• Sultan Baybars:: Base in imperial city of Cairo, he is overlord of the Arab empire.

• Reginald Welles:: Older knight in Guy's party. Killed during crusade.

• Edward:: Heir to Henry III of England.
• Simon de Montfort:: Earl of Leicester and husband to Eleanor. He tried to control England.

• Roger Gervais:: Loyal to de Montfort's. Also, Eve and William's son and Leila's brother. Left behind in England, at age 9, when his parents went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
• Baldwin D'Eyvill:: Roger's knight. Christine's lover.
• Christine:: Guy's dead wife and Ranulf's daughter. She was also Baldwin's lover.
• Ranulf de Lusignan:: Christine's father. He fostered both Guy and Roger, then became Roger's guardian after his parents went on pilgrimage.
• Anselm:: The priest serving Roger at his castle.
• Margaret Gray:: A young woman married to a knight who serves the earl of Surrey, Guy's cousin.
• Robert Burnell:: One of Guy's knights.
• Father Philip D'Arcy:: Guy's stewart and half brother from his mother's first marriage.
• Maude:: Roger's wife.
• Nicholas de Warenne:: Guy's young six year old son.
• John de Warenne:: Earl of Surrey. This baron is Guy's cousin and his overlord.
• Griffin:: Guy's English war horse, a destrier.
• Enid:: Buxom, middle aged servant in Guy's castle.
• Matilda:: Countess of Surrey. John's plump wife, who is maternal to her 7 children and the wives of her husband's knights.
• Blanche de Hengham:: Young lady who's husband serves the earl of Surrey, Guy's cousin.
• Raymond Gray:: Husband to Margaret and knight to John, earl of Surrey.
• William Gervais:: A Welsh marcher lord killed on pilgrimage. Father of Roger and Leila and first husband of Eve.
• Henry Langton:: One of Guy's knights.
• Montgomery:: One of Guy's knights.
