• Sid Halley: Former steeplechase jockey whose career ended when one of his hands was irreparably injured; his new occupation as investigator continues in this second book in the series which began with Odds Against.
• Rosemary Caspar: wife of trainer George Caspar, for whom Sid used to ride as a flat jockey; she comes to see Sid because the brilliant racers her husband had trained in the past hadn't lived up to their potentials. She suspects foul play, so she wants Sid to guard Tri-Nitro, the latest of their hot prospects.
• Charles Roland, Admiral (ret.): Sid Halley's former father-in-law; father of Sid's ex-wife Jenny. Charles continues to be Sid's greatest supporter.
• Lord Friarly: "earl, landowner, and frightfully decent fellow...for whom <Sid> had ridden a lot of races." He asks Sid to investigate a syndicate which Friarly suspects is fixing the way its horses are run.
• Trevor Deansgate: racehorse owner
• Commander Lucas Wainwright: director of the Security Service, the investigative, policing arm of the Jockey Club; he enlists Sid to investigate Eddison Keith, who is a member of the Security Service.
• Chico Barnes: Sid's friend and partner at Radnor's Associates. Chico is a martial arts expert.
