  • Celia Sanjuán: Celia's life is forever altered when, as a young woman in the early 1950s, she has an encounter with a stranger who visits her town of Villasanta de la Reina. Her life is transformed by this encounter, and she becomes a marked woman, "the Black Widow".
  • Margarita: The narrator's mother. She is also referred to as Marga. She married Antonio in November 1952.
  • Don Javier Orellana: The town's doctor. He does house calls in the afternoons.
  • Pablo Otero: The identity assumed by the narrator.
  • Carmina: The author's sister. She moves to Paris.
  • Uncle Eloy: The narrator's uncle, who works as a takes on the narrator in his workshop.
  • Mariano: Mariano had the jewellery shop in the town in the alley behind the church of Santa María. He allows the narrator to use his workshop.
  • Braulio: Taxi driver.
  • Madeleine: The narrator's sponsor. She has an upmarket shop in which she displays his jewellery.
