Fairest

by Gail Carson Levine

In the kingdom of Ayortha, who is the fairest of them all? Certainly not Aza. She is thoroughly convinced that she is ugly. In a land where beauty means everything, Aza finds herself lacking in every way possible. Her only redeeming quality is the beauty in her voice. If only her singing reflected what others saw when they looked upon her face. She spends most of her time trying to hide her face from the staring eyes of guests at her parent’s inn. Definitely *not* Levine's best work, and the audio version is even worse. The music is sung in this horrible, juvenile mock-opera style and is off-key way too often. Unfortunately, it's hard to skip/skim past the worst parts in the audiobook format, and there are a lot of parts I wished I could skip!

Pre-teens may enjoy the story, but that's the best I can say about it.

My favorite thing about Gail Carson Levine’s writing is that she hides a great love story into such a great action packed novel. She makes her books so adventures and also finds a way to make them romantic. I just adore her writing style and her plots.
