  • Drizzt Do'Urden: the drow hero of "The Legend of Drizzt" series. Drizzt has spent more than a century on the surface fighting for "good" with a generally black and white view of the world. However, in the wake of the tragedy in Neverwinter and the collapse of Luskan, Drizzt is starting to realize that there is a lot more gray out there than he ever realized.
  • Dahlia Sin'felle: a former follower of Szass Tam with a chip on her shoulder. Dahlia is out for revenge, and she is taking Drizzt along for the ride.
  • Barrabus the Gray: the deadly Champion of the Shadovar. Barrabus doesn't work for the Shadovar by choice, and he loathes his master, the tiefling, Herzgo Alegni. He has been imprisoned by the power of his old sword and wants nothing more than to be free.
  • Herzgo Alegni: the Shadovar tiefling who is trying to maintain control of Neverwinter.
  • Sylora Salm: a Thayan sorceress and follower of Szass Tam. Sylora is trying to establish a dread ring in Neverwinter Wood.

  • Valindra Shadowmantle: an insane lich who was once a powerful member of the Arcane Brotherhood in Luskan.

  • Neverwinter: the former "Jewel of the North." The wondrous city of Neverwinter was destroyed when a volcano erupted in a fanatic's attempt to wake a primordial of fire. The city is slowly rebuilding itself in the wake of the disaster.
  • Neverwinter Wood: the woodlands north of the city of Neverwinter.
  • Luskan: the once great "City of Sails." Luskan is a large, rough and tumble city on the Sword Coast that is currently ruled by pirate captains.

  • Shadovar: a subgroup of the Netherese who have taken over Neverwinter. The Shadovar are portrayed as a vicious and savage people. Because of their goals and presence in Neverwinter, the Shadovar are in a turf war with the Ashmadai.
  • Ashmadai: the fanatical worshipers of the Arch-Devil, Asmodeus. They come from Thay and follow Szass Tam, the necromancer. They have been trying to construct and maintain a dread ring in Neverwinter Wood for almost a decade.
