  • Brownshirts: The Uniforms of the SA (Sturmabteilung, storm troopers), originally founded to engage in street fighting; later a feared and notorious instrument of threat and intimidation as used by the National Socialist Party. The black uniforms referred to the SS, the Schutzstaffel, a defense unit, which became a kind of elite army separate from the regular Wehrmacht German army, and was feared for its power and brutality.
  • Center Party: A democratic political party founded in 1870 in Germany, with close connections to the Roman Catholic Church.
