Quotes edit see section history

  • “By giving ourselves permission to speak directly to LGBT youth, Terry and I gave permission to all LGBT adults everywhere to speak to LGBT youth. It forced straight people--politicians, teachers, preachers, and parents--to decide whose side they were on.”
    Dan Savage
  • “The point of the project is to give despairing LGBT kids hope. The point is to let them know that things do get better, using the examples of our own lives. For some people things get better once they get out of high school, for others things get better while they're still in high school. And there are brave, out LGBT kids in high schools and middle schools all over the country who aer helping to make things better--for themselves and their peers--in their schools today.”
    Dan Savage
  • “We've got to dispel the myth that bullying is just a normal rite of passage--that it's some inevitable part of growing up. It's not. We have an obligation to ensure that our schools are safe for our kids. And to every young person out there, you need to know that if you're in trouble, there are caring adults who can help.”
    President Barack Obama
  • “I am glad I did not miss out on having an amazing relationship with my family. I really thought they were ashamed of me, that I was hurting them somehow by being gay. And it's just not true. I believed all that crap I was told when I was young. I believed that I was going to hell and that I was a bad kid and that I was hurting my parents. And none of it was true.My parents tell me all the time now how proud they are of me; how much they love me.”
    Laurel Slongwhite

Organizations edit see section history

  • The It Gets Better Foundation: http://www.itgetsbetter.org. Organization started by Dan Savage and Terry Miller (book's authors), who had one simple idea: post a video to remind LGBT youth that the bullying will fade eventually. It may take going away from where you are, but it will get better. The video, posted on YouTube, went viral. When President Obama uploaded a video in the cause, it also went viral. From this, the foundation now has over 10,000 videos uploaded--from celebrities, politicians, leaders, and adults who survived bullying, taunting, and more. Now, they have a life, filled with joy, pride, and happiness--better than they could have imagined when they were younger.
  • The Trevor Project: 866-4-U-TREVOR(866-488-7386) Founded by James Lecesne, Peggy Rajski, and Randy Stone, the Trevor Project is a 24-hour hotline here for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people to help whenever you or a friend might need someone to talk to. There is also the TrevorChat online messaging service free of charge and trevorspace.org where millions of LGBTQ people can connect online in a safe and accepting social space. In 1998 the Academy Award winning film Trevor appeared on HBO; in the story thirteen year old Trevor attempts suicide after his crush on a boy was revealed and his "friends" reject him. The film-makers wanted to make sure if anyone felt the way Trevor did in the film that they could call an LGBTQ-friendly resource and get help. Because there was no suicide or crisis lifeline for LGBTQ youth, the Trevor Project was created. If you or someone you care about feels depressed or is considering taking their own life, please call the Trevor Project at the number above. The call is free and confidential
