No matter how many times I re-write my Top Ten list, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden make it. The emotion the Steinbeck is able to paint with his words is almost without parallel. A masterpiece.

I really can't stand Steinbeck, I know this one's a classic, but I found it incredibly depressing and wordy.

    I read this book for the first time just after my first daughter was born. I was actually nursing her as I read the ending. I still cry just thinking about it.
