Elise lives in a farm house with her uncle and aunt. She lives an idyllic life there with her best friend Franklin. Then junior high starts, and Elise finds herself in a new social world with new rules. Her friendship with Franklin is on the rocks and she is bullied by her locker partner.

But on her 12th birthday, she is given the first of keys to open up mysterious locked doors in the barn. They reveal to be presents from her dead father who wanted to prepare her for adolescence.

With the help of the doors, Elise is able to deal with her friendship with Franklin, make a new friend, and find her way in junior high life.
