  • Barbara MacLane: Barbara is the younger sister of the bride, Rosemary, and older sister of Gordon (Gordy). Barbara has always felt somewhat in the shadow of her older sister Rosemary, and when Rosemary announces her engagement and subsequent marriage Barbara once again feels envious of her older sister and despairs of ever "catching up" with her.
  • Rosemary MacLane: Rosemary is eighteen years old and a freshman at Cal Berkeley. She is the older sister of Barbara and Gordy and fiancĂ©e of Greg.
  • Greg Aldredge: Greg is the fiancĂ© of Rosemary and also a student at Cal Berkeley.
  • Gordon MacLane: Gordon (Gordy) is the young brother of Rosemary and Barbara.
  • Bill Cunningham: Bill is a senior at the high school Barbara attends. Barbara develops an interest in the popular and cheerful Bill.
  • Buster: Buster is the elegant Siamese cat that belongs to Gordy, the MacLane's youngest child.
  • Tootie Bodger: Robin (nicknamed Tootie) is a classmate of Shelley's who is more interested in Shelley than she is in him.
  • Mr. MacLane: Mr. MacLane is the husband of Mrs. MacLane and father to the bride Rosemary, Barbara and Gordy. Mr. MacLane is also an English teacher at Barbara's high school.
  • Mrs. MacLane: Mrs. MacLane is the wife of Mr. MacLane and mother to Rosemary, Barbara and Gordy. Mrs. MacLane also teaches a class of "slow" students at Barbara's high school.
