• Noelle Downie: Noelle is Emerson and Tara's best friend. She is a midwife and loves her job but commits suicide at the start of the novel.
• Tara Vincent: Tara is Noelle and Emerson best friend. She teaches at Hunter High. Her Husband Sam got killed in a car crash by one of her students and she has one daughter called Grace.
• Grace Vincent: Grace is Tara's 16 year old daughter and Jenny's best friend. She goes to Hunter High and is still grieving over her father.Quiet & beautiful. More like her father than her mother. She used to go out with Cleve and is still fighting for him even though he dumped her.
• Haley Hope Knightly: Haley is Anna's daughter and is fighting cancer for the second time. She is looking for a bone-marrow donor. She is a happy 12 going on 13 girl who loves her family as much as they love her. She is glad now that her father is back in her life.
• Sam Vincent: Sam is Tara's husband who got killed in a car crash by one of Tara's students. He and his daughter, Grace, got on very well. He was a lawyer and he loved his family. Also had relations with Noelle.
• Jenny McGarrity Stiles: Jenny is Emerson's daughter and Grace's best friend. She goes to Hunter High and everybody likes her.
• Emerson McGarrity: Emerson is Tara and Noelle's best friend. She is married to Ted and has a daughter called Jenny.
• Ian Cutler: Ian was Sam's best friend and was engaged to Noelle. He is a lawyer and is close to Tara which could possibly amount to something more.
• Anna Chester Knightly: Anna is Haley's mom and Bryan's ex-wife. She is the leader of the Missing Childrens Society after the disappearence of her newborn daughter Lily.
• Cleve: Cleve is Grace's ex-boyfriend and Suzanne's son. He is in college and still cares about Grace. He was delivered by Noelle.
• Bryan: Bryan is Anna's ex-husband and he also lost Lily when he was trying to get home from the army. He is back home now Haley has cancer.
• Suzanne Johnson: Suzanne is Cleve's mother and was close to Noelle. she turns 50 in the book.
• Ted: Emersons husband and Jenny's father.

• Mattie Cafferty: Mattie is one of the student's at Hunter High. Tara teaches her drama. Mattie crashed into Sam's car when she was texting her boyfriend and moved away shortly after.
