“The plotting is admittedly (by Eco) convoluted but recaps the development of anti-Semitism movements in the 19th century in Europe, culminating in the Dreyfuss affair and the publication of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion." One or two characters are composites of real historical figures and the repellent protagonist Simonini is a fictional construct to tie the rest of this historically accurate account together. Highly recommended. If you're a Robert Darnton fan, as I am, you'll find this ties in nicely with his own recent books on the popular press in pre-revolutionary France.”
