“I am reading this for my Mystery Book club. I think I would have liked it better if I had read the first in th series.”

They are all here, searching for healing following the death of Jo and finding it in an unexpected place. It was easy to envision the tangle of destruction left by the storm that initiates the action after similar 100-mile-an-hour winds mowed down huge sections of our own forest last July. The book almost feels like two separate stories--one escaping the storm's destruction with the baby, and the second, slower story, finding out why he is being hunted. Krueger explores the potential for good and evil in each of us, interpreted by Henry Miloux and another Mide (Ojibwa medicine man). There are examples of Christ-like sacrifice for one who has done nothing to deserve their love, but the Ojibwa faith presented is essentially dualistic--good and evil on a par with no guarantee of God's ultimate victory. ”

After a devastating storm passes through the area where a family is vacationing, the daughter and her father find a murdered young mother and a baby who survived. The child had been hidden. Someone is trying to kill the baby and the family is in danger while they try to keep the infant safe and solve the murder. I enjoyed this book.”

Somehow I also missed knowing that the title is an informal name used by Northwestern Ontario/Minnesota to refer to their part of the world. This is the 12th book in a series whose titles all indicate a connection to my favorite setting. Regrettably, though, it's a potboiler though, with questionable insights into native American rites. I may try one or two more of the series to give it a fair evaluation.”

Cork O'Connor and his family defeat truly evil people with help from friends. I enjoyed all the Ojibwe lore and legend. The description of the Minnesota and Ontario wilderness is beautifully written. this is a truly special book.”

Plenty of mystery and intrigue, keeps you turning the pages and sometimes holding your breath. Along with the mystery and danger Cork O'Connor and his family find themselves involved in, this novel has plenty to offer in the way of family and relationship dynamics. Cork loves his kids and will do anything necessary to keep them safe, but what happens when things are beyond his control? You can literally hear his heart pounding as he races to solve the mystery that he and his family are caught up in, and as he struggles to save his daughter from the pain that solving the mystery may cause her. Once uyou pick this book up, be prepared for an emotional ride that will keep you guessing right up until the very last page.”
