• Sheriff Delroy Jenkins (Del): In charge of investigating Clarisse's sudden death, and inclined to give Olivia some helpful info. He and Olivia are interested in each other, but it hasn't gone farther than that.
• Clarisse Chamberlain: A close friend of Olivia's who dies at the beginning of the novel. She was a widow and a very successful businesswoman.
• Hugh Chamberlain: Clarisse's older, kinder son.
