- Bella: The oldest daughter of Henri Beauchamps. Bella runs her father's household even after he remarries. She is "unconventional" in her attitudes, including getting an education in herbalism from the local Granny.
- Sebastian: The Duke who has disappeared from sight, although nobody really knows why.
- Eric: The bastard son of the Old Duke, he could be considered Sebastian's step-brother. He is the Gamemaster of the Woods.
- Sapphire: Sapphire is an Elemental Spirit servant. She is able to write, and is assigned to Bella as her personal attendant.
- Genevieve: Bella's not-wicked step-mother
- Granny: The "Granny in the Woods": a healer, herbalist, identifier of magic abilities
