Nothing is "direct" in this reading but it is calming. The story of a boy losing his dog after his father being imprisoned is not as tragic as it sounds but it is very easy to comprehend what the boy goes through. Not emotionally moving as it should be although it was interesting.”

“Summary:
Sounder is a mutt of a coon hound, with a bellowing yowl that can be heard two counties over. He befriends a poor sharecropper and becomes a source of income and comfort to the family. However, the book really isn't about Sounder. It's about a man's struggle to provide for his family and a boy's effort to live up to that example. It's about the effects of cruelty and injustice and the power of love and hope. It's a glimpse into the world of Jim Crow, a study of a once common culture, a bildungsroman. It's one of the best written books I've ever read.
