The riveting conclusion to Scott Westerfeld's New York Times best-selling trilogy that's "sure to become a classic" (School Library Journal).

Alek and Deryn are on the last leg of their round-the-world quest to end World War I, reclaim Alek's throne as Prince of Austria, and finally fall in love. The first two objectives are complicated by the fact that their ship, the Leviathan, continues to detour farther away from the heart of the war (and crown). And the love thing would be a lot easier if Alek knew Deryn was a girl. (She has to pose as a boy in order to serve in the British Airforce.) And if they weren't technically enemies.

The tension thickens as the Leviathan steams toward New York City with a homicidal lunatic onboard: secrets suddenly unravel, characters reappear, and nothing is at it seems in this thunderous conclusion to Scott Westerfeld's brilliant trilogy.

Characters edit see section history

  • Prince Aleksandar of Hohenberg: aka Alek. Prince and heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. He longs to have Deryn's Darwinist skills but is torn between his appreciation of the Darwin and loyalty to his native Clanker technology.
  • Deryn Sharp: aka Dylan. A midshipman aboard the Leviathan. She is a girl disguised as a boy so that she may serve as a part of the British Air force. She is also in love with Prince Aleksander. Though not knowledgeable in Clanker technology, she has great skill when it comes to Darwinist "technology" and a brave heart. She is in love with Alek.
  • Bovril: A perspicacious loris that had a nascent fixation for Alek, but now belongs to both Alek and Deryn. He is very adorable and most intelligent, part of a batch hatched by Dr. Barlow in Leviathan.
  • Dr. Nora Darwin Barlow: She is the extremely intelligent granddaughter of Charles Darwin and a member of the Zoological Society of London, alternatively known as the "lady boffin."
  • Count Volger: A wildcount whose duty is to insure that Alek safely secures the throne.
  • Adela Rogers: A young reporter for the newspaper rival of the New York World. She was partially based off of the real Adela Rogers.
  • Mr. Hearst: Publisher and owner of a newspaper out of Los Angeles California.
  • Nikola Tesla: A brilliant, but possibly mad, inventor who claims that his new invention, Goliath, can be used to stop the war. He was a scientist in real life and a competitor of Thomas Edison. He developed the alternating current system. Thomas Edison stole a bunch of his patents and Tesla always resented him for it but when Marconi used his patents (Probably because he didn't like Edison but didn't mind Marconi all that much) he let him use 15 of his patents for various things. He was an awesome person.
  • Eddie Malone: A meddlesome reporter for the New York World who was previously able to swindle stories from the prince's life and publish them. An altogether Horrible person.
  • Pancho Villa: An actual historical person, he is a Mexican Revolutionary and allows Hearst to film his revolution in exchange for equipment.
  • Captain Hobbes: Captain of the Leviathan.
  • Mr. Newkirk: Other midshipman aboard the Leviathan and friend to Dylan (Deryn)
  • Mr. Rigby: The bosun of the Leviathan who watches after the midshipmen
  • Dr. Busk: The head "boffin" aboard the Leviathan and the doctor
  • Master Otto Klopp: Alek's guard, master of mechanics.
  • Hans Bauer: Another of Alek's guards
  • Lilit: Zaven's daughter. A skilled fighter and mechanic. Central to the revolution that Alek and Deryn helped stage in Istanbul.
  • Kizlar Agha: In Behemoth he is an intelligent advisor to the Sultan of Istanbul. The head of his security. Becomes an Ottoman diplomat to the U.S. in Goliath.
