“Summary: Inside Out And Back Again is a thrilling story about a young girl named Hà that lives in Vietnam. Hà is a smart girl with 3 older brothers: Brother Quang, Brother Vū and Brother Khoi. She lives with all 3 brothers and her mother. Her father was in the navy and disappeared in war. No one knows where he went. Most people believe he is dead. Hà liked how her life was and didn’t want to change but, once the Vietnam War came along and things became different. First Hà’s best friend TiTi moved away. Hà felt alone and terrible. The war made things worse and Hà had to leave Vietnam. She was on a ship for 3 weeks hiding from the communists. Things just kept on getting worse. Over in America they were helping everyone that was coming from Vietnam. People got sponsors and lived in a real house with their sponsors. Once Hà’s ship finally got to America everyone was getting sponsors but none of the sponsors wanted to take in a family of 5. All the sponsors wanted 3 people at the most. One day a man came in asking for some one to help at his car repair shop. Since Brother Quang studies engineering he was good at fixing things so Hà’s family finally got a sponsor. Hà and her family moved to Alabama with their sponsor. The one problem was that the only person in her family that spoke English was Brother Quang. Because Hà couldn’t speak English she got held back a grade at school. At school she was considered the new dorky kid that everyone could pick on because she didn’t speak English. Hà hated her new school. She started English lessons but just thought it was stupid just like every one thought of her, but one day all the girls started to be nice to Hà. Hà’s favorite was a nice girl named Pam. Hà didn’t know how to pronounce Pam so she calls her Pem. Pem was really nice. Hà also met a nice boy named Steven. She calls him SSsi-Ti-Vàn. Hà finally got friends and they made her feel happy. Even with a lot of people hating her she still found who she was and forgot about the terrible things happening in Vietnam. Hà found out that her father was really dead. Even with her father actually dead she still learned how to live a good life.
Opinion:
I thought that Inside Out And Back Again was a great book. I never realized how bad the Vietnam War got. I really understood what Hà was going through. I really liked the ending. It showed that no Katter how hard things can get you can still be yourself and things will turn out just find. My favorite part was when Hà first met Pem. Pem was so nice and made Hà happy. It showed that friends could always help. I really loved the book.
Recommendation:
I would definitely recommend this book to any one that was interested in what life would be like if you moved to America. I say this because Hà moved from Vietnam to America and her life basically changed. If I were to rate this book I would probably give it an 8. It wasn’t my favorite book that I have ever read but I really liked it and it was well written. Inside Out And Back Again was a great book and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
