  • “And Violet? Who took in the homely one-armed gal? Only the man who was to become her world, her breath, her reason for being, her light, her hope, her wide-opened and multicolored everything. It sure made a person believe in bus travel.”
  • “Of course you don't get to be my age without learning that "Why?" is the million-dollar question - the who-what-where-when-and-how questions reporters try to answer are a piece of cake compared to the why. If you're able to explain the why, you're able to explain everything, and when's the last time you were that smart?”
    Violet Mathers
  • “"Didn't you guys hear?" Violet asked. "There's a war going on."Kjel shook his head. "Always worrying about the details."”

  • “Life is full of mystery, Violet. There is no way we can understand one-billionth, one-trillionth, of all that makes up this world and beyond. That’s what faith is for. It holds you up when everything is conspiring to push you down.”

  • “The trouble is, when a person’s blessed with beauty, sometimes they forget it’s a blessing and instead think it’s a privilege, and unfortunately I think Berit has come to expect the same privilege across the board.”

  • Just think about that for a minute. Why are most of us unable to follow this deceptively simple directive, because we hardly love ourselves.
