  • King Hamlet: Hamlet, the protagonist's father, murdered by Claudius, who takes the throne and marries Gertrude.
  • Hamlet: Protagonist. Cannot accept his father's death, and his mother's marriage to Claudius. He seeks to expose Claudius as murderer and usurper.
  • Claudius: Present King of Denmark and married to Gertrude, Hamlet's mother and Queen.
  • Gertrude: Queen of Denmark and Hamlet's mother.
  • Ophelia: Beautiful young woman. Hamlet was in love with her. She is daughter of Polonius
  • Polonius: A pomopous and coniving man, who is Lord Chamberlain in the King's court.
  • Horatio: Hamlet's close friend.
  • Laertes: Son of Polonius and brother to Ophelia. Laertes is Hamlet's foil as he is quick to action and decisive, whereas Hamlet is a procrastinator.
  • The Ghost: Spirit of King Hamlet.
  • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: Two bumbling courtiers and former friends of Hamlet
  • Osric: Courtier who summons Hamlet to duel with Laertes.
