- King Hamlet: Hamlet, the protagonist's father, murdered by Claudius, who takes the throne and marries Gertrude.
- Hamlet: Protagonist. Cannot accept his father's death, and his mother's marriage to Claudius. He seeks to expose Claudius as murderer and usurper.
- Claudius: Present King of Denmark and married to Gertrude, Hamlet's mother and Queen.
- Gertrude: Queen of Denmark and Hamlet's mother.
- Ophelia: Beautiful young woman. Hamlet was in love with her. She is daughter of Polonius
- Polonius: A pomopous and coniving man, who is Lord Chamberlain in the King's court.
- Horatio: Hamlet's close friend.
- Laertes: Son of Polonius and brother to Ophelia. Laertes is Hamlet's foil as he is quick to action and decisive, whereas Hamlet is a procrastinator.
- The Ghost: Spirit of King Hamlet.
- Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: Two bumbling courtiers and former friends of Hamlet
- Osric: Courtier who summons Hamlet to duel with Laertes.
