Adrian has a comfortable and predictable life. He has had the same employer his entire adult life, which has been nearly six hundred years. He has no real connections and only one real relationship. Unfortunately, it is time for Adrian to move on, and he is not allowed to take his friend Jim with him. The friends have been together for the past forty years, and Jim has been the only friend that Adrian has ever known.
But the corporation has assigned Adrian to another task, and he must give up the life that he has enjoyed in order to avoid alerting the public of the immortals’ existence.
He travels to an island owned by the corporation, where his appearance is transformed completely. There he is given his next assignment which involves being the liaison for the corporation to an up and coming scientist named Marie Graves.
Marie is a twenty-three year old Master’s degree student at the University of Maryland. She is constantly obsessing about her time spent in the laboratory and the progress of her research. Marie’s friend and roommate Bonnie tries her best to keep Marie grounded firmly in the real world. Bonnie’s motherly attitude helps to remind Marie that she has to take care of herself.
Marie shares the news with Bonnie that a major company is giving a grant to her research, which could pay for the majority of the remaining work. Marie is confused about the corporation’s interest in her research, but is willing to stay in the dark as long as they are willing to pay the bill.
The next evening, Marie has an interview with Jeremiah Holten, the corporate representative that is in charge of her grant. Mr. Holten is ominous and secretive, and he already knows everything about Marie’s research. He gives Marie a blank check to finish her research, but refuses to tell her what his company’s interest is in it. Jeremiah explains that Marie will have a liaison assigned to her that will be the go-between for her and the corporation.
The following morning Adrian arrives at Marie’s door. Marie is taken aback at the sight of Adrian’s luminescent green eyes. Adrian chooses to relax her by taking her to breakfast. The electricity between them is undeniable, but they try their best to be professional. This doesn’t work very well for them because of their mutual attraction for each other. They both do their part to spend as much time together in the next couple of days as possible. This backfires on Adrian when a beaker of acid breaks on his hands and splashes his stomach. Marie sees the accident, but when she goes to investigate the severity of the chemical burn, she finds Adrian’s hands and stomach pristine and unharmed. Adrian manages to distract Marie away from this glaring clue to his true nature, but the conversations that they’ve had were already making her very suspicious.
Adrian finds that he simply cannot lie to Marie and tells her what he is. He tells her that his birth date was in 1455. He tells her that he can heal from nearly any wound, and he tells her that he can see auras. These auras correspond to the emotions of the owner and explain the luminosity of Adrian’s eyes.
Although stunned, Marie is more flattered with the fact that Adrian refused to lie to her.
Adrian recognizes the danger that he has put Marie in. The Corporation is very jealous of its privacy and secrecy. Unfortunately, the Corporation finds out all too quickly and chooses to force Marie to complete her research by way of human testing on her lab assistant. To make their point, the Corporation kills Bonnie to prove that Adrian cannot protect Marie. This rattles Marie severely, and she gives in to their demands. The operation on her assistant is a success, but that is not good enough for Jeremiah. He wants to see the viability of the Corporation’s plans for her work, and uses Marie as the next guinea pig.
When Marie wakes, she finds herself in a whole new world. She can hear things that she has never heard. Her eyesight is better than it ever was, and she can see auras.
The Corporation has made her an immortal.
One thing hasn’t changed. Adrian is still by her side. He helps her escape her lab and they are forced to go on the run. Adrian first seeks help from the founder of the Corporation, Sam Garver. Sam chooses to back Jeremiah and tells Adrian that he is on his own.
Adrian then calls his one friend. Jim is more than ready to help. He sets the couple up with a security crew that will help to protect them. Adrian and Marie realize that it isn’t enough to be protected. They have to put a stop to Jeremiah’s plans, because he will not rest until Marie is his slave.
Before they can make a plan, however, the Corporation comes for Marie. During the fight, the team is introduced to a couple of new weapons that the Corporation has invented. The one of concern is a dart that can damage an immortal’s DNA and make him mortal. Marie sees this weapon in action when it hits Jeremiah’s right hand man, Sanford, making him crumble to the floor instantly. Marie manages to escape, but Adrian is taken prisoner.
The team decides that rescuing Adrian is a priority. Jim finds out where the Corporation is holding him and they make their plan for his rescue. The team manages to succeed in their efforts, rescuing an unconscious Adrian and taking Jeremiah’s injured man, Sanford with them. Unfortunately, one of the key members of their team is killed in the process.
The rest of the team manages to escape with Adrian, Sanford and a kidnapped Sam Garver. The battle wipes out much of Jeremiah’s security force, and the team decides to waste little time to go after Jeremiah. Before they do, Marie puts some heavy time in the lab and is able to repair the damage done to Sanford. He decides to help the team as payment for Marie’s help. Adrian is in worse condition, however. When he awakes, he is mortal, and his eyesight is severely impaired. It is no easy fix for Marie this time, and Adrian is forced to remain in his current condition.
With Sanford’s help, and the knowledge that if Jeremiah is defeated Sam will regain control of the Corporation, the team goes to find Jeremiah at the island. The team battles their way through all of Jeremiah’s replacement forces to finally reach him in his office. Jeremiah refuses to give up without a fight, but Marie is no match for him. Jonathan, another member of Marie’s team, steps up to the challenge, and uses some well timed distractions to take Jeremiah down.
Adrian and Marie are finally able to be together. Marie has the opportunity to find a cure for Adrian’s condition and the chance to share their love for eternity.
