Blood Red Road (Dust Lands #1) has a futuristic dystopian theme with an Old West meets Arabian Nights feel. I was nervous the first few pages though! I get kind of weirded out when an author uses a different dialect and drastically different words for everyday common items. I know this is a part of world building, but I feel it is difficult to do successfully and you better get to the point quickly or I am too distracted with the words on the page instead of being swept away by the story itself. Fortunately for Young, she writes a pretty action packed fast paced tale, so you are thrown right into things lickety-split. I like that. Let's not waste time here, I can get to know you on the road!
What I like about Saba, the main character, is that any regular person would most certainly be afraid of her, but she still keeps a sense of naivete from growing up so isolated. It's a nice balance if you ask me, but I certainly would not want to me this chick on the streets or get on her bad side! In the world Moira Young has created there is no shortage of conflict, characters, mishaps and triumphs that all come together to keep you on your toes and wondering what is going to happen next.
I am not running around gitty about this one, but as far as I am concerned, I enjoyed Book #1 enough to be looking forward to getting my hands on Moria Young's Rebel Heart Dust Lands #2. If you love dystopian, than Young has your number and I say give it a go. For the younger readers the language is pretty clean and the steamy scenes are kept in check, so no worries there, but as you can guess by the title of this book it is not about conflict resolution.
