Only once before, 400 years ago, did the Gods step in to prevent evil from taking over the land. Nine Gods chose a champion from among the races of Terrene, bestowing upon them special powers, including immortality, which enabled them to restore the lands to a balance between good and evil. These champions were called the White Lions.

Nikalys, 17, and his sister, Kenders, barely 16, live peacefully in the town of Yellow Mud located in the Oaken Duchies on the continent of Mantioch … until the blistering hot day they go to the nearby lake for a swim. There they spy an unknown Sun Elf mage conjuring up a massive water creature hundreds of feet tall, shaped like the torso of a man. The elf, Jhaell Myrr, directs the watery beast to plunge through the village of Yellow Mud, apparently drowning all in its path, including Nikalys’ and Kenders’ parents and older brother, Jak.

As the only survivors, brother and sister strike out on their own, hoping to somehow avenge their family. But they must keep the secret from the authorities that Kenders, too, has magical powers. For the Duchies’ inhabitants, whose memories are as short as their mortal lives, have not only forgotten over the years that the White Lions and their magic had once saved their world, they have learned to fear magic and have outlawed it throughout the land.
