Benny Richardson has already lost his father. He is separated from his mother while traveling west in the 1800's and meets a mysterious disguise-wearing man who promises to look after him when his mother is injured in a barge accident. When the man turns out to be a bank robber Benny doesn't know how to escape or if he really wants to. Jeremy Carlisle slowly becomes his protector, provider and friend. But God promised never to leave or forsake Benny. Does Benny have an obligation to keep following his father an mother's teaching when it seems as if God no longer cares?

Another tragedy almost deprives Benny of his best friend when Jeremy must serve time in a faraway prison and struggle with his own faith. Benny faces bullying, loneliness and lack of Christian fellowship and teaching. He gains an unexpected and unlikely friendship along with a startling legacy from his father. He also thinks he has found a way to help Jeremy by riding in a horse race with a five hundred dollar prize, though he wonders if he can collect it.

A puzzling letter from Jeremy makes Benny wonder about the promise of the spring, and how Jeremy expects their lives to change forever.
