  • Rachel: The main character, a teenage girl who has crossed the Line to bring medicine to a sick man. A Reg, she has never been across the Line before.
  • Pathik: A teenage boy, an Other, who is named for his gift of being empathic. The grandson of Elizabeth Moore, although he's never met her.
  • Vivian: Rachel's mother, Daniel's wife, and employee of Ms. Moore.
  • Ms. Elizabeth Moore: Owner of the property along the Line, employer of Jonathan and Vivian, lover of Indigo, mother to Malgam, grandmother of Pathik.
  • Jonathan: Employee of Ms. Moore, caretaker of the property
  • Daniel: Rachel's father and Vivian's husband, presumed dead since he was on the other side of the Line when it was activated.
  • Malgam: Son of Indigo and Elizabeth Moore, father of Pathik, husband of Nandy. Rachel brings medicine to him so that he may live.
  • Nandy: wife of Malgam, stepmother of Pathik, teacher of the children of the Others
