New England of 1660 is not a welcoming place for a young girl who wants an education. She secretly befriends Caleb, the young son of an Indian chieftain. Her father tries to convert the tribe and one of his projects becomes the education of Caleb at Harvard while Bethia is indentured as a housekeeper and has to content herself with surreptitious observation of Caleb's lessons.
