A boy living in an extremely structured society where everyone is happy, is chosen to become the next person to inherit the "memories" of when the world was still at war, had sickness, etc. No one else knows about these times except him and the giver. With the memories he can't stand the society he was born in so he leaves.

  • Dad: Jonas' father is a Nurturer. He cares for the new children until they are placed in families. Jonas learns a secret about his father that does not bode well for the family.
  • Lily: Jonas' younger sister. She has a creative imagination. She likes to be with new children and also to tell stories.
