- Dad: Jonas' father is a Nurturer. He cares for the new children until they are placed in families. Jonas learns a secret about his father that does not bode well for the family.
- Lily: Jonas' younger sister. She has a creative imagination. She likes to be with new children and also to tell stories.

- Fiona: Jonas' friend whom he frequently volunteers with. Jonas likes Fiona. Fiona truly loves the old, and no one is surprised when that is her assignment.
