Orwell’s terrifyingly plausible dystopia is the cautionary North Star by which we seem to chart our course as a society – are we there yet? Are we there now? Are we getting warmer? It’s a parable of...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I thought that the beginning of this book is very slow and hard to get into, but I understand that it is this way because the reader needs to be introduced to an entirely new world and its way of thinking. The rest of this book is very good and it was hard to put the book down. There were only a couple of details that I did not like: the beginning, the fact that the chapters/sections were long and it was hard to stop at a good place if you needed to, and the fact that the appendix and afterword were boring.”

The dystopian society it invokes is so well thought out, so strong, and so airtight that it's frightening. It suggests the possibility for total dehumanization of people, while allowing the perpetuation of a totalitarian society and the continuous power of the elite. However, hope comes in a strange place: the use of a newspeak appendix in the back, which refers to the society of 1984 as being something of academic interest that occurred in the past and, apparently, ended.”

The author truly made the Party seem a bit familiar to today's government. This is very impressive seeing that this title was published back in 1949. To follow the plot was a bit tricky and understanding his views of the world governments was also a challenge for me. Nonetheless, I was fascinated at how possible a world like the one described in "1984" could be.
I have read many dystopian titles before. It's actually my favorite genre. But I've never read one like this, where it delves deep into detail of the structure of a dystopian society and the ideology of its government. Just to think of living in an insane world like this sends chills down my spine. It makes you grateful of the world you live in now, but also aware that this world we live in can easily be turned upside down. ”
