I've still only read the first section of the book, focussing on Somalia.

It's a brilliant insight in this nation. Highlighting failures by UN, US and the Somalis themselves and documenting history, culture and modernity.

Left me feeling extremely informed but searching for Hope

This book was a real chore to read. I only made it about 2/3 of the way through the book, before giving up. Peterson chokes the reader with so many details that it makes it hard to see the big picture in any of his stories. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, since the book is an account of his perspective as a reporter on the ground, but I expected better story telling. The book does succeed in revealing how “dirty” warfare really is, no matter which side you are on.

Very high quality autobiographical book about war in Africa. Reminds me of Hobbes' view of life in the state of nature: nasty, brutal, and short.
