Narrated by Elliot Hill. I didn't find this worthy of the Odyssey Award Honor it garnered. The production was clean but I found Hill's reading too understated and restrained for the material and I was never fully pulled into the story. Lib note: There are several scenes of graphic swordfights and severing of hands, truly gnarly ghosts, and spooky cemetery settings that will put off more sensitive readers.

Entertaining story with some good action scenes and generally relatable protagonist

Not sure why the story is being told 8 years later from a young adult perspective rather than at the time, but that is only occasionally awkward

I liked that she used real historical figures (Longspee, Stourton, Hartgill, Ela) and weaved in facts about them

Main action wraps up and there is another 100 pages of a secondary plot (the dead chorister and finding Longspee’s heart)

Very good audio – Hill has such a pleasant narrative voice, and can do a nice range for the various male and female characters of different ages (both alive and dead!)

Very good grayscale illustrations throughout highlight characters and scenes (remind me of Chris Riddell’s style)

Includes author’s note read by Cornelia Funke

Printed book includes glossary of words, people, places (I think audio might have had a pdf)

Odyssey Honor 2013, Notable Children's Recording

    4th – 6th grade

Jon was being sent to a new boarding school. He felt like his mother didn't care about him and that she only cared about her new boyfriend, "The Beard". He didn't think his stay at this boarding school would be interesting in anyway but something happened. He started to see ghosts around the school that only he could see! Terrified, Jon turned to the help of the great knight who was said to help whoever needed it. The knight came as a ghost helping Jon and to keep away the evil ghosts who haunt him. With the help from his new friend Ella and the knight, they go through an adventure and try to make the bad ghosts go away forever!

I liked this book because it was an easy read but also I didn't expect the ending which I will not share with you. I really liked that Jon and Ella became good friends because they work well together to figure out what they have to do and how to do things. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommend that people my age should read it.

There are a few things I disliked in this book. I didn't like the fact that people didn't believe what Jon was saying about the ghosts. They all thought he was just playing a joke. Another thing I didn't like was that mean little ghost boy who made Jon think that the ghost knight was bad when really the boy was using the knight for evil things. I thought that child deserved what happened to him. But in the end, I thought this book was well writtened and people should read this book!

Great example of fan-historical. Loved the interview at the end of the audiobook to learn the history behind the fantasy. Characters, story development and story telling is as good as one would expect from Funke.

Really good book, sad that i was over when I finished it. Real dramatic, it is placed in England. Yep. Lots of talk about kissing though... you never know. The ghosts' are cool, real nice to the kid.

Some swear words and the content make it a little iffy for a lot of kids in this 8-10 age range (that it's recommended for). If kids liked the Sixth Sense they would like this book since it's about summoning ghosts and ghosts that want to kill one boy in particular as revenge upon his bloodline. An interesting story and one that boys who are into knights and ghosts will really like. For me this book was about 2 1/2 stars.

Listening on a playaway. A few moderate swears so far.

A tale of ghosts and family quarrels. Jon Whitcroft is sent off to his father's old school. Banished from his home, dog and mother by the "Beard" his mother's new boyfriend. As he wallows in miserable self-pity he is confronted by a blood thirsty ghost bent on vengeance. It appears that the ghost has a long standing history with Jon's ancestors and is determined that Jon is his next victim. So, Jon summons the ghost of the knight Longspee rumored to "help those in need." A fun ghost story with plenty of action but like some other of Funke's books for children this one too is sprinkled with profanity that might prove objectionable to some parents and children.
