When the king of the Mushroom Kingdom is faced with the harsh,
upcoming winter and a lack of food for the people, he sets off in an
attempt to appeal to a faraway land for aide. Meanwhile, his daughter
- Peach - is tasked with managing the kingdom until his return. A new
assistant named Toad is placed in charge in order to help the
Princess, and their beginnings seem bright.
Halfway across the world, in the scorched land of Scaldergate,
rests the kingdom of the turtle-like koopas. A rivalry and tension
exists between Traw - the ruling king - and his son, Bowser. After
seeking the skills of the rumored magician - Kammy - Bowser prepares a
poison and ends his father's reign. Now at the control of
Scaldergate, and looking to expand his empire, the new king sets his
sights on the largest nation on the mainland: the Mushroom Kingdom.
Winter has arrived, and cries for help swamp the Princess and Toad.
Rations are growing thin, and Toad discovers that the piping beneath
the castle has given way to the cold. Toad discovers the services of
two plumbers - Mario and Luigi - from a nearby town, and quickly seeks
their help. And that happens to be when Bowser makes his move.
The Kingdom is devastated. The citizens are turned to stone, Peach
is captured aboard one of Bowser's flying galleons, and Bowser has
won. It seems that all is lost, but Mario, Luigi, and Toad have the
chance to fight back. Their following journey carries them across
deserts, seas, and dark lands, until reaching the final gauntlet.
