“It is easy to get the impression that studies of the atonement belong to some ethereal, far-off world of the academic theologian, interesting as intellectual exercises no doubt, but having nothing to do with the business of living here and now. That is not the way of it at all. ... The cross is relevant ... it speaks to our needs and challenges us to new adventures of faith. We must not miss the truth the Bible writers are conveying to their readers because they use old-world imagery to convey it. It is easy to stay with the imagery and to dismiss what the writers are saying as old hat, interesting probably in an earlier day, but of no practical use to us in our very different circumstances. When we take the trouble to find out what these ancient writings mean we find that the cross speaks to twentieth-century people just as loudly and just as clearly and just as challengingly as it did to any previous generation.”
