Didn’t Like It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“Although this book hit the market with great fanfare, it did not resonate with me. It was too sensual, too gory, too predictable, too vampirically trendy. I've advised my Dekker loving offspring that I'd rather they not read it.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“It was pretty good. Had a lot of religious things in it that most people don't realize, of course it is still a fiction book but focuses on a part in the Bible that most people don't know about or choose not to read about. Interesting spin on the Nephilim compared to other books like City of Bones, etc. In his rendition they are evil, like vampires even. Definitely an interesting read. ”

That was jarring in a book set three centuries back. Second, the religious underpinnings were strange. This book was so dark and twisted, I can't believe it is Christian fiction. Anyone who would read this and shun Twilight has some deep hypocrisy issues they need to work through.
All that being said, for the most part I enjoyed it. In a lot of ways it reminded me of Dracula, mind you I read that fifteen years ago so the remembrance may be more nostalgia than true comparisons. The dark, gothic feel wrapped me up and I felt like I was there. ”

This is a story of love, lust, and what lies in between. It is a story of sacrifice. It is a battle between powerful beings. And it most definitely is an emotionally-stirring book.
Star Rating: 4.75 stars
Content Rating: PG-13 (For mature audiences.)
Opinions:
I understand why some people found this book controversial. It is definitely different from books I typically read, and did have some sensual pulls and moments that left me begging the characters not to give in. I think this is what happens when you deal with a topic about the world's view of love, human desires and cravings, and what true love is. Most of the book kept me wondering what on earth was going on! I knew what was happening, I could feel that something evil was lurking, but you couldn't place your finger on exactly what it was! Until finally we are given some answers as the main character, Toma, learns them.
Overall, I would recommend this book, but note that the topics and content may not be for everyone. I would not recommend it for younger teens, since most of Ted Dekker's books are for a more mature audience. So I would say make your own judgement on it, because it really comes down to you and your choices.
In the end, I say it is worth reading- even if it does make you squirm a little.
Iffy Content:
Some. It really is up to the reader because I would definitely recommend this book. I am a sucker for romances, but even more so for stories that deal with the true meanings of love and sacrifice. I do also enjoy stories that have a good "happy" ending, but are still realistic. . . Books that allow for a lot of emotional tension and have feeling to them, like any girl I guess. Yet I am drawn to books that deal with topics that run deep, through all of us, and thus allow for a stronger connection between them.
I do not find this book "ban-worthy", if you are worried about that. It is sort of a taboo thing to talk about (love, lust, evil, human desires). The worse part about it is that you really have to read the whole thing in order to see where Dekker is going with all this stuff. The "evil" may be controversial, but it's not something I can explain without giving the story away.

I would recommend that if you are going to give the book a shot, read it all the way through. If you do not, you won't be left with a very good picture of what the book is about nor its quality.”

Actually you can't even call it a trilogy anymore because he weaves the "books of history" it into all of his books now. The only redeeming part of this book was in how he showed how easy temptation can draw a person to the darkness, how evil can consume a person, and how once consumed people can not see the way back to the light, to goodness, forgiveness and grace. I get how Ted was trying to tie Tomas act of selflessness to Christs' death on the cross, but it came across as weak by comparison. If you are new to Ted Dekker I would suggest you start with his book "Blink" or "Obsessed" which are so much better.

“Another page turner on par with the Dan Brown series 'davinci code'. Everyone loves a good love story too!”

With a Christian overtones, this suspenseful thriller offers a heart-wrenching journey of redemption and hope. If you are a Ted Dekker fan, this is a must read.”

Just when I felt that Dekker was losing his creativity in the morass of marketability, he comes up with this great little volume. A tale of love with parallels to the Divine Romance itself, I was completely lost in the story to the very end. I've read virtually everything Dekker has written, but apart from Books 1-3 of the Circle series, "Immanuel's Veins" may well be his very best.”
