Glossary edit see section history

  • slippery dip: The Australian term for a playground slide.
  • The Evil: <Grandma X to Jaide> "It <the Evil> wants you for the same purpose it wants every living thing in this world; to absorb you and make you part of itself. As to what it is, well, no one knows exactly where it comes from, and it has no name in any human language. It just is. . . . . We call it 'The Evil'." The Evil starts by taking over lower life forms, like insects and rats, and moving up to more advanced life forms, like dogs or birds, and eventually humans. And if it catches you, it will try to take over your mind and slowly absorb you into it.
  • Wardens: "The Wardens are the enemy of The Evil. We stop it from getting into this world, and we have done so for centuries. If we ever weaken, all that we hold dear will be destroyed." Every Warden has a special power, or Gift, that they must learn to use and control.
  • Troubletwister: "Young Wardens just coming into their Gifts are often unconscious causes of magical trouble, and they twist and complicate any existing trouble as well." . . . "Troubletwisters are particularly vulnerable to The Evil, and particularly prized by it, because if it succeeds in taking over one, then it can take over his or her Gift as well."

Notes for Parents edit see section history

Reading Level: Ages 9-12

Has some creepy scenes, but the children always manage to use their strengths to escape or outwit "the Evil". The grandmother is the main adult in the book, and she is a powerful force for good. Both parents are good people and loving parents, but they are written out of most of the book.
