- Vassar Spore: A girl with dark hair who has her life all planned out, and plans to go to an Ivy League college. Her crazy Grandma Gerd, who she has never met, blackmails Vassar's parents into making her go on a summer long trip to Southeast Asia.
- Hanks: An Asian-American cowboy who, at first, Vassar finds incredibly annoying.
- Grandma Gerd: Vassar's crazy artist grandmother.
