  • Kate Winters: Kate discovers she is Skilled and is the last of a powerful family of Skilled who created the book Wintercraft. The Wardens of the City of Fume are hunting her, they want her power so they can win the war with the continent.
  • Silas Dane: A collector who works for the High Council. He has been told to capture Kate but he has his own agenda.
  • Edgar Rill: A fellow worker at her uncle's bookshop, and a friend to Kate. Though Kate discovers there have been many secrets he's been hiding from her.
  • Kalen: Once the servant of Council woman Da'ru, he has now lost his sanity after failing to deliver the book of Wintercraft.
  • Artemis: Kate's uncle, but wants nothing to do with the Skilled
  • Mina: The leader of the Skilled who live in the City Below in Fume.
