This novel shouldn't be lumped in with the "disability fiction" genre. As a story of loss from a young boy's point of view, it is lovely, similar to Emma Donoghue's Room. But I am a mother of an autistic child, and I have to say this novel's protagonist, even if he supposedly has Asperger's (high functioning autism) does not display any signs of autistic behavior save a couple of stereotypical ones that the author seemed to just throw in as if wanting to create an autistic character. They are not at all in line with his regular behaviour. In fact, the father and mother in the story are far more neurologically disturbed than the eight year old boy.
