- Ku Klux Klan: In the story The Five Orange Pips, three men are murdered by the K.K.K. Sherlock Holmes reads to Watson a passage from the American Encyclopedia. The passage is as follows: "Ku Klux Klan. A name derived from the fanciful resemblance to the sound produced by cocking a rifle."
