Overall, the story was complex, intreguing, and a bit sad both because it involved the investigation about a murdered baby and that one of the main characters is killed.

The main character, the woman private investigator, was complex and human. I enjoyed the way she interacted with her family and with the other characters in the book. Most of the supporting characters were well-drawn. However, I found a couple of the main male characters too overbearing and perhaps not as well developed as some of the other characters.

The tie-in between the murdered baby and local voodoo-like culture was quite interesting. The writing style was OK: a little heavy and slow, but not too bad.

It was a good story. But, I am perhaps not the best judge of this book because, for the most part, I am not a big fan of the mystery sub-genre involving professional sleuths. It's not that I haven't found some great private eye and cop characters, but, to me, these characters or stories need something special going for them than just the fact that they are professionals.

This book is about a lady private investigator, working on the case of a runaway wife. The plot rapidly changes once the body of an infant is found in a styrofoam cooler, floating in the water, and other people get involved. Then, there are more murders.
