“Overall, the story was complex, intreguing, and a bit sad both because it involved the investigation about a murdered baby and that one of the main characters is killed.
The main character, the woman private investigator, was complex and human. I enjoyed the way she interacted with her family and with the other characters in the book. Most of the supporting characters were well-drawn. However, I found a couple of the main male characters too overbearing and perhaps not as well developed as some of the other characters.
The tie-in between the murdered baby and local voodoo-like culture was quite interesting. The writing style was OK: a little heavy and slow, but not too bad.
It was a good story. But, I am perhaps not the best judge of this book because, for the most part, I am not a big fan of the mystery sub-genre involving professional sleuths. It's not that I haven't found some great private eye and cop characters, but, to me, these characters or stories need something special going for them than just the fact that they are professionals.”
