In The Earth Dragon Awakes, Henry Travis and Chin get separated during an earthquake. Chin and Au Sing live in an apartment and get caught under different floors during the earthquake. Chin gets out and finds help from Au Sing’s friend who digs him out at well. Over at the Travis’ house, the chimney falls in the house in Mr. and Mrs. Travis’ room. They get out of their house, too, and stand in the front yard for a while. Mr. and Mrs. Travis create a buc brigade to put out their next door neighbor’s fire. The earthquake causes three huge fire that turns into one gigantic fire. After a while the Travis’ give up and decide to leave San Francisco. They get all of their stuff and walk away and get on a boat and leave. Then Chin and Au Sing get on a boat and leave, too. Then the families get back together in the end and go back to San Francisco to see what happened.

When the earthquake hit, they ran out of their house with as much stuff as they could carry and fled the city. The earthquake had also started fires all over San Francisco that combined and formed even larger fires.
