A migratory bird tells the story of Little Wing, a housefly that thought he was a bee. Little Wing is born in a forest away from a city and has no idea as to who he is, where he is or what he is. He discovers he can fly when escaping an army of red ants that took away his brothers and sisters. He meets Lou (a caterpillar) who informs him about Professor Moth, the Sage of the Forest that can surely tell him what he is.

Little Wing goes deep into the forest looking for Professor Moth. He runs into an audience being conducted by Mary, the Queen of Butterfly Forest, who had a ladybug as her Prime Minister. Little Wing is arrested, but saved by the Queen. When she asks him a question, all her attendants repeat her exact words. The Queen gives him his name and he realizes that he is in Butterfly Forest.

After restarting his search for Professor Moth, Little Wing comes across a strange looking lady (a spider). She invites him to jump and land on her ‘net’ (in reality her web). He is accidentally saved by some bees passing by with buckets full of honey who hit him on the head. As he wakes up, he sees Professor Moth and goes talk to him. The professor had just lost his computer and cannot quite tell Little Wing what he is, but tells him that he resembles a bee. He has to return the following day to determine for sure what he is. Little Wing, after telling Lou all his adventures, retires for the night in a field of flowers.

Bob Bumblebee, who is collecting honey with his friends, awakens little Wing. In spite of the obvious differences, Little Wing thinks that he is a bee. He decides to join the bees and asks the professor to transform him into a bee (adding the stripes and the antennae) which is something that professor does. He goes in search of the bees promising that he will return in the afternoon to learn what he is.

Little Wing realizes that he can only carry one bucket of nectar. Sergeant Drone asks him about the other bucket and then sends him back to bring two buckets. Bob helps him to do the task by carrying three buckets (one strapped to his back). Later the bees had to go to a valley to fetch more nectar, but it is a dangerous place. Some birds attack the bees and Little Wing saves the life of Bob.

After some indecision as to what to do next, Little Wing decides to look for the professor to find out what he is. Professor Moth informs Little Wing that he is not a bee, that he is in fact a housefly, a member of the “Musca Domestica” family. He also tells him that the spider is one of his worst enemies, that there are also things called flyswatters and insecticides that are used to destroy flies.

Knowing who he is, Little Wing goes looking for Bob. The bees make him a knight for saving Bob’s life. After the ceremony, Little Wing goes searching for Lou, but only finds Lou’s bed. The old spider tells Little Wing that Lou died and that the ants took his body away. After feeling terribly sad, Little Wing finds Lou who is now a beautiful Monarch Butterfly riding on a cloud. They decide to travel together while seeing a lovely rainbow.
