By that I mean the plot ties up in its own time without seeming forced, everyone gets their just desserts (in my opinion), and you leave the book feeling resolved, like it ended naturally and completely.
Almost nothing in the first fifth drew me in. There was nothing particularly exciting or necessary that compelled me to read further. But having read one book by Michael Connelly before and knowing that this would probably be good, I kept with it.
The character who is Mickey Haller – the lawyer protagonist – is defending is, by far, one of the most annoying fictional characters I have ever encountered. But fortunately, there are other redeeming qualities in the book that distract from her insufferable personality.
For someone who will never go to law school, I liked that the book explained a lot of the legal process. It was kind of like Law School Lite Lite Lite Lite. It was informative and also gave me an interesting perspective on the proceedings in the court and the way the lawyers presented their cases.
This book isn’t ground-breaking, but I enjoy law-related fiction, so this was a good book to read. ”
“I can't get enough of Michael Connelly. Everytime I start one of his novels I can't put it down - The Fifth Witness being no exception. Much of this Hallar story evolves through the court room drama and although in real life the testimony as it occurs here would not be replicated, it is an interesting and compelling evolution. I could kind of see the outcome coming, except for the 2nd murder, it did not lesson my interest in getting to the conclusion. Highly recommended.”

The story follows Mickey as he defends a client accused of murdering a member of the bank that was trying to forclose on her house. It builds slowly to a climax and a decision and then has a surprise ending that is just glossed over at the end. Still that said I enjoy the way Connelly leads you through the trail and makes you feel like you are getting an understanding of how things really work.”

I thought it was good, not spectacular but good. I really had wished his client was guilty as she was horrible but he got her in the end. This is becoming a predictable trait in the Micky Haller novels. One I hope that is not repeated in the next as its really beginning to grate. With the mortage crisis I think it could have been a lot more inventive, say ripping people off with payment protection insurance? The government secret service involved with Bonderant? The president had a mortage with the same bank? Just ideas Michael - I'm available, call me. I did not read this book on my amazon kindle, I read it on my iPhone.”

Here again the story is interesting to read and a subtle way of learning about the US court system and its rules. Surprising end ... ”
