The Son of Neptune opens with Percy Jackson being chased by the Gorgon sisters. They intend to kill Percy in order to avenge the killing of their sister Medusa four years ago, but Percy has amnesia and does not understand why they are chasing him. He barely escapes with his life and stumbles upon a goddess named Juno. Juno gives him two options: he can carry her across the highway, through the Caldecott, and across the Little Tiber river (though she warns him that when he crosses the river he will lose the Mark of Achilles, feel pain, loss, and misery beyond anything he's ever known and slowly regain his memory); or he can retreat to the safety of the sea and live a long, happy life.

Percy chooses to carry her, and when he gets to Camp Jupiter, a camp for Roman demigods, he meets two other demigods: Hazel and Frank. Percy saves Frank from the Gorgons by creating huge hands from the water of the Little Tiber, and then uses the water of the river to rip the monsters apart. He also loses the Curse of Achilles, since it is a Greek blessing, and Greek magic is washed away by the Little Tiber. Percy is taken to the camp, Reyna, the camp praetor, initially dislikes Percy because he ruined her home (Circe's island in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series).

He is interviewed by Octavian, the camp augur. During the war games Percy impresses everyone by his battle skills and instincts. Mars (Ares in Greek), the god of war, then appears and claims Frank Zhang that he is his son, and that Frank is to go on a quest. Octavian complains that there has been no prophecy, and Mars throws a grenade that transforms into a pen and writes a prophecy: Go to Alaska. Find Thanatos and free him. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die.. Mars insists that Percy must go on the quest in order for him to learn some respect, the third person to go on the quest is up to Frank. Frank requests that Hazel also come on the quest. Percy, Frank, and Hazel are to free Thanatos, the god of Death because monsters are no longer going to Tartarus and souls are escaping from the Underworld. Mars also gives Frank a spear with a dragon tooth tip, advising him to use it wisely, since it has only three charges.

While traveling, Percy struggles to regain his memory. They travel in a little boat, which is all that composes the Roman Navy. They first reach R.O.F.L., which is a organic food farm run by the goddess Iris. They also see the giant Polybotes, the giant born to kill Poseidon/Neptune, leading an army to destroy Camp Jupiter She advises them to look for Phineas, another mortal returned to life by Gaia, who is killing harpies for sport, since they can only eat from his table. He asks Percy to capture a particular harpy called Ella for him, in exchange for the location of Alcyoneus's camp, who is the eldest giant and is born to kill Hades. Percy goes to find Ella, discovering that she can memorize anything she reads. They decide , instead to make a gamble: Phineas and Percy will both drink a vial of gorgon blood. One will die, the other will be healed. Phineas accepts, and they drink a vial each. Percy prays to Gaea to give the safe one to the more important person, and he receives the healing vial, while Phineas die and gives them the location of the camp: Hubbard Glacier. Because of the healing vial, Percy slowly starts regaining his memory. They next make shore at Seattle, where they discover that the Amazons are running the online company Amazon.com. The Queen, Hylla, initially refuses to help them, but relents after forgiving Percy for destroying her home in the Sea of Monsters, and seeing Hazel tame the fastest horse in the world, Arion, helps them escape from Oretra, the first Queen of the Amazons who returned from the dead. Arion then carries them in chariot to the glacier, where they confront Alcyoneus Hazel reveals that she had died, but that Nico di Angelo (a son of Hades) saved her from the Fields of Asphodel, while looking for his other sister, Bianca. They also make a stop at Frank's grandmother's house, where she reveals that Frank has the family gift passed down to him from Periclymenus, the Prince of Pylos, that he can change into any animal. The House is destroyed by Laestrygonian giants, and they escape, while frank's grandmother presumably escapes using the gift. When they finally get to Alaska, the land beyond the gods, they find Thanatos in chains. His chains cannot be broken unless melted by the fire of life i.e. Frank's stick of life. Hazel attacks Alcyoneus, who cannot die in the land he is born in (the land they are currently in), while Percy is defending Frank from hundreds of ghosts. Percy then destroys the edge of the glacier, taking all the ghosts into the sea. They take Alcyoneus over the borders of Alaska to Canada and as he charges Frank, Frank transforms into an elephant (his family gift) and Hazel kills Alcyoneus. After that Frank and Hazel rushed back to where Percy had gone over the edge of the glacier, and Percy was standing there unharmed. Percy regains his memory on the journey back to Camp Jupiter. They speed back to Camp Jupiter, knowing that the Camp is under attack. Percy takes charge and leads the Romans into battle, with the help of his old friends, Tyson, his brother and a cyclops, and Mrs. O'Leary (a hellhound). The Romans defend their camp with valor after discovering that Percy saved the golden eagle from Alcyoneus (the giant born to oppose Pluto or Hades). Percy then challenges the giant to a duel, as the rest of the camp fought his army and the giant, Polybotes (born to oppose Neptune or Poseidon). Percy calls to Terminus, the border god, to help him defeat the giant. Percy eventually beat Polybotes after a treacherous battle by using the head of Terminus' statue as a weapon (Thus a demigod and god working together),which was the god's manifestation in the camp. The camp names him praetor, a leader of the Roman camp. At the end of the book Hazel realizes that Leo closely resembles her "boyfriend" Sammy (back from when she was alive first). There are only two problems; First that she had first died 60 years ago and second that she and Frank like each other. The whole camp waits as Argo II, the ship with the head of Festus, shows who its occupants are.

  • Perseus "Percy" Jackson: The main character and demigod hero of the previous series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and plays a main role in this series as well. He has lost his memories, and remembers very little of his "former" life. He is a son of Poseidon.
  • Frank Zhang: One of the three protagonists. He fights with a bow and arrow and has a "certain flexibility in form," but it is unknown what that means yet. Called Fai by his grandmother.
  • Hazel Levesque: Hazel is one of the three main protagonists. She is a Roman demigod with dark curly hair and gold eyes. She has a secret.
  • Annabeth Chase: The demigod daughter of Athena. She is clever and quick, and has been Percy's love interest throughout the series. Annabeth is the only person Percy remembers from his past life.
  • Lupa: A she-wolf who raises all Roman demigods from a young age to be brave fighters.
  • Hannibal: An awesome battle elephant who wears Kevlar. He lives at Camp Jupiter and is bulletproof. Elephants were always used in Roman Calvary. He is used for Roman war games.
  • Octavian: He is the Augur at Camp Jupiter. He sacrifices stuffed animals to receive messages from the gods. He is also a centurion of the first cohort.
  • Ella: A book-loving harpy with red feathers and a photographic memory. She is a very important harpy.
  • Thanatos / Letus: The Greek god of Death. He is NOT a part of Hades but he is Hades servant in a way. Is seen in a dark robe surrounded by skeletal guards.
  • Juno / Hera: The Queen of the Roman Gods. She is well respected by Romans
  • Jason Grace: He is the son of Jupiter. He is a Roman camper while his sister, Thalia, is a Greek camper. His memories were washed away by Hera, and he still cannot remember some things.
  • Piper McLean: A Greek demigod, daughter of Aphrodite, and head counselor of the Aphrodite cabin at Camp Half-Blood.
  • Leo Valdez: The demigod son of Hephaestus. His mother was killed by Gaea when he was a child, and he blames himself for her death. He is amazing with tools and has a special connection with fire. He is one of the seven demigods of the new prophecy.
  • Reyna: She is the Praetor of the 12th legion at Camp Jupiter, and is a powerful and important demigod in the new prophecy. She also kinda likes Jason Grace.
  • Mars/Ares: The roman god of war. Greek name: Ares
  • Grey: A skeleton warrior that was given to Frank by his father Ares.
  • Alcyoneus: The eldest of the giants born to Gaea. He was born to oppose Pluto/Hades and can't be killed in his homeland.
  • Phineas: The son of Poseidon with the gift of prophecy. When he revealed too much about the plans of the gods, Zeus punished him by making him blind and making the harpies snatch his food.
  • Nico di Angelo: Son of Hades. Treated as an oddball and wanderer.
  • Terminus: the Roman god of boundaries and landmarks.
  • Polybotes: one of the giant sons of Gaia. Born to oppose Poseidon / Neptune.
  • Charon: the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly-deceased across the river Styx and Acheron
  • Vitellius: One of the Lares at Camp Jupiter. Sometimes called Vitellius the Ridiculous. Tries to act like he has been in every war.
  • Ortrera: First Amazon queen, daughter of Ares/Mars.
  • Iris: the rainbow goddess, owns R.O.F.L., usually sends Iris messages for gods and Greek demigods
  • Kinzie: One of the Amazons that serve Queen Hylla.
  • Tyson: Percy’s brother, a Cyclops.
  • Stheno: A gorgon who tries to kill Percy on his trip to camp Jupiter. Pretends to be an employee of Bargain Mart.
  • Euryale: A gorgon who attacks Percy. Also one of Medusa's sisters, back from the brink of death! Continually offers samples of food from her employer, Bargain Mart.
  • Queen Hylla: Sisters with Reyna. Percy destroyed her home in the Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief series). Leader of the Amazons.
  • Fleecy: works at the R.O.F.L. co-op owned by Iris. She is a nebulae (cloud nymph). She manages Iris-messaging.
  • Hades/Pluto: Is the god of Death and riches and is Hazel's dad.
  • Arion: A super-sonic smart-aleck horse. He can run on water because he is so fast. Can also create a sonic boom with his amazing speed, only one warrior can ride him.
  • Queen Marie: Hazel's mother. Dies when Hazel raises cursed metal out of the ground to kill the giant she helped to raise.
  • Sammy: Hazel's old boyfriend.
  • Gwen: Girl at Camp Jupiter
  • Gaea: Gaea is the goddess of earth, mother of the gods, titans, giants, and many other monsters. She is the villainess mastermind of the series.
  • Dakota: Centurion of the fifth cohort at camp Jupiter whose father is Bacchus: God of Wine. Has an addiction to Kool-Aid.

Before Percy drinks the Grogon's blood that helps him regain his memory, he calls Grover a Satyr, instead of a faun
**This is not an error. Percy is Greek, which is why he calls things by their Greek names instead of their Roman names.

When they kill Alcyoneus, there was no god that helped them, even though a giant can only be killed by a combination of god and demigod

Chapter XIX is spelt 'Hezel' but 'Hazel' in the table of contents.
