Ah, the Sweet Valley series. One of the most scorned series in the world. But the ironic thing is that almost every girl (and the occassionally guy or two) growing up in the 80s and 90s who are probably avid readers today owe their thanks to the series for introducing them to the joys of reading.

Hard to say how to rate the Sweet Valley High books; I vividly remember being addicted to them one preteen summer, and trading them with my friends. And I remember that even then I thought the writing was just awful, and the plots terrible. Neither of these bourgeois blondes are exactly role models for young women. But… like I said, I was addicted at the time, so there must be something to them that salves the angst-ridden pre-teen soul..
