The mysteries are light and easy to follow with a police procedural driving the storyline. What makes the books are the characters and not just the two main ones, Eve and Roarke. I love all the side characters who are quite alive with their own fully formed personalities. I reread parts of the series regularly just to revisit these old friends.

Like the previous book in the series, Witness in Death is a departure from the norm. It's as though Nora wrote the extremely intense Conspiracy in Death and then needed to give herself or her readers a break by doing the literary equivalent of a sitcom's musical episode, first with the over-the-top James-Bond-ishness of Loyalty, and now with an homage to Agatha Christie in Witness. It's not subtle--the murder takes place onstage during a production of Witness for the Prosecution. It's also not the first book Nora's written with a Christie-ish flavor.

Homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke are in the audience on opening night when, during the climactic scene, the character of Leonard Vole is killed... as is the actor playing him. A real knife had been substituted for the harmless prop knife.

What follows is a nicely intricate, convoluted tale, with the actors playing roles within roles. The solution is elegant, and makes perfect sense, and is done just the way Hercule Poirot would have done it. The emotions and motivations of all the players are clear and understandable.

In addition, there are the developments in the ongoing series story. We see Peabody and McNab respectively baffled and frustrated by their feelings for each other, and Trueheart getting his break. And then there's one of my absolute favorite Eve/Roarke scenes: when Eve tries to put together a romantic dinner for the two of them. It's a favorite because I can relate to it so well.

Eve Dallas is faced more brutally with her past in this installment. She must find the one who set up/killed a leading, but totally detestable, actor, in Witness for the Prosecution, while she and Roarke watched. The task is hampered by the acting skills of the suspects, who have many secrets and are connected in countless ways. Robb's talented writing again kept me reading.

Robb aka Nora Roberts. #10 in the Eve Dallas mysteries of the future. These are so great. Takes place in 2059- where Eve is a lieutenant in the NYPD. Read all of these. If you can start at # one the character building will make more sense.

    10. When a celebrity is killed right before her eyes, New York detective Eve Dallas takes a new place in crime—as both officer and witness to murder. This series is thrilling, tension-filled and passionate. Good read!

This review could apply to any book by Nora Roberts (ie J.D. Robb)...she can't write a bad book. If you like one of her books, you'll like them all. I especially like the 'In Death' futuristic series by J.D. Robb... Whatever you get/borrow/steal (lol) ...ENJOY!!!

I like all the In Death books, although the graphic descriptions of the crime scenes started to be too much for me. Other than that these are great stories, love the relationships of all the characters.

This book is based on the theater and has some really good plot twists. As usual, Roarke and Dallas work together on a case. Great read.
