“This was a gripping read from the start! It starts with Dirk & Steele agent Eddie in a cage at the agency, but it's because he's been having a harder time controlling his fire due to a pathogen he was exposed to in a previous novel. He is given an assignment to find and protect a young woman who is one of the last of her kind. Lyssa has been on the run and in hiding for over 10 years from the people who murdered her parents, and she has found refuge in the underground tunnels of Manhattan, NY. Like Eddie, fire is her weapon, and her curse. She also dreams of eyes within flames many nights. When she finally meets the person whose eyes match those in her dream, she wants nothing to do with him. Of course, those eyes belong to Eddie, and from the moment he set eyes on her, he feels compelled to try and earn her trust.
Lannes the gargoyle and his wife (who is a witch) are on hand to help Eddie, and it was great to see these characters again! Especially as I just recently re-read his brother Charlie's novella which was in the Dark Dreamer's anthology. I also enjoyed learning about Eddie's background, and more is revealed that makes a lot of sense in how he is the way he is! I loved Eddie and Lyssa together, and that it took time for them to really get to know each other.
The Cruor Venator are the Big Bad after Lyssa. They are witches of the worst kind, they kill to absorb the essence of their victims, and if they are supernatural, they also gain the ability of whomever they kill. Super scary to encounter, no one can withstand them. That's all I will say on what happens in the story. If you are a fan of the Dirk & Steele series like I am, than you will love this story too! If you have never read this series, but are a fan of the early Anita Blake stories by Laurell K Hamilton, and the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, then you might want to give this series a try. It'll be worth your time!”
“One of Dirk and Steele's Agency valued members is Eddie. He came to them a very young boy in dire straits. Eddie is a pyrokinetic and former car thief and will do most anything for the Agency. But he is having an awful day. He has just found out that the man who killed his sister has been let out of jail. And, he has lost control of his fire, flames erupted from him everywhere. His spine caught fire, and his is powerless. Helpless. They are waiting for him, he knows. He pretends not to feel the soaring waves of heat moving around him. But in the end, it is easier just to burn.
When Eddie leaves the cage, Serena is waiting. They are waiting. They ask him to go to New York to rescue a girl who is hunted by a Cruor Venator. Which is another word for a Super witch. The worst kind. The kind that eats people, skins people, possesses people. This girl had run when she had watched her parents killed by this Cruor Venator and had been running ever since. Well, that is all it takes for Eddie to want to go for this girl and rescue her. But he doesn't trust the dragon Long Nu who knows so much about this girl. She is not telling something important. She admits to Eddie that the girl is a Shape-shifter a dragon. She gives him a burnt picture of Lyssa to reconize her.
When Eddie first comes upon her she does not trust him, but she smells the fire in him. The second time she sees him she is in danger and he saves her, but she also tries to kill him. Eddie has to call in some help. When the help is someone she knows could be killed by the Cruor Venator, she panics. So she does have a heart and Eddie is falling for that heart. She realizes that the Cruor Venator is after the people she cares for. So the homeless people that she has been living with are the ones that are the ones that are targeted.
This book is really good. Eddie finally gets his mate! And she is perfect for him.”
“So, I remember first meeting Eddie in Tiger Eye and hoping we were going to get his story. Well 10 books later and here it is. It was worth the wait to see Eddie grow through the series especially knowing that he had just started with Dirk & Steele so he was pretty much "us" I am very happy with his mate and think Ms Liu has only gotten better with each story. Now I gave to hold my breath for Roland's story (gotta love the damaged hero) and a reunion for all our crew to catch us up on how their lives have gone forward. ”RogueWren wrote this review Sunday, May 20, 2012. “Marjorie Liu did not disappoint! Eddie's story was everything I expected it to be. I liked the mix of characters and their interactions. The next story can't come soon enough.”PentwaterGma wrote this review Friday, March 2, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
