- Elodie: MAIN CHARACTER - 12 yr old girl from the fictional island of Lahnt, who is sent away by her parents to become an apprentice in the city of Two Castles.
- Masteress Meenore: A dragon. Often refered to as "IT." Toasts bread and cheese for coins. Has good inductive and deductive reasoning.
- Count Jonty Um: An ogre who lives in Two Castles. About 11 feet tall and a shape shifter.
- Misyur: Count Jonty Um's steward and friend.
- Master Thiel: A young (20 yr old) cat trainer, Elodie runs into him a lot.
- Princess Renn: Giddy daughter of King Grenville, engaged to Count Jonty Um
- Goodwife Celeste: A kindly woman Elodie meets on the ship at the beginning of the story
- Greedy Grenny: Nickname for the king of Two Castles
- Albin: Elodie's friend, a mansioner
- Master Dess: A man on the ship with Elodie, sells kittens
- Master Sulow: A mansioner Elodie wants to work for.
- Master Jak: 3rd assistant to the chef

- Two Castles: The capital of the fictional kingdom of Lepai. Two Castles has two castles within its borders - one for the King Grenville III and Queen Sofia, and one for an ogre.
- Kingdom of Lepai: See map of of Lepai in front of book. Lepai is a small kingdom ruled by greedy King Grenville III and Queen Sofie.
