I WAS HAPPY TO BE returning from Europe in June of 1996, having spent the month traveling around the Continent visiting various institutions well endowed with diamonds: the Grunes Gewolbe (Green Vault) in Dresden, the treasury at the Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, the diamond district in Antwerp, and the French crown jewels and several centuries of diamondiferous portraits in the Louvre.
